Egypt Air is seeking to extend its network in Africa and is looking for partners in the central or western regions of the continent with which it can cooperate, Chairman and CEO Hussein Massoud told ATW.
MS is evaluating several options, including potentially basing aircraft together with Star Alliance partner South African Airways and even starting a new airline. The new airline or joint aircraft base could be ready for operation as early as next year, Massoud said.
He believes it is possible for MS to open one or two new destinations in Africa every year (ATW Daily News, Oct. 16, 2009). It currently serves 16 destinations in Africa (excluding Egypt) and will add Lusaka this fall.
Massoud confirmed that the MS fleet is expected to grow from 66 to 72 aircraft by the end of 2013 or early 2014. The carrier is already planning its future fleet through 2020. “Early next year it will be clear" which type of aircraft it will purchase for its future fleet, he said, declining to give details on how many aircraft will comprise a new order.

It is good to have a vision
By Captain PPSIt is good to have a vision of expansion within Africa but it must consider service as it's core platform. When airlines are protected by their governments, and there is no clear policy to deregulate air travel within Africa, Only the major carriers are the ones benefiting and the regular traveler suffering as there is no other option available. Authorities ought to be considerate about the service provided by the airlines, and protect traveller's rights rather than protecting the airlines. The African traveller has no choice niether the right to hold on to if violated by the airlines. It's about time that African aviation body thinks seriously to deregulate air travel within the African continent inorder for it to pickup as is the case with the rest of the world. There is no lack of potential but lack of Leadership.
With Egypt Air's entry into
By AnonymousWith Egypt Air's entry into STAR Alliance over time, I have seen a much better level of service on the Continent. I like the idea of them partnering up with South African, and I have read that STAR is also looking at extending an invitation to Ethiopian Airlines as well which should benefit the airlines and the consumer. Lufthansa and its subsidiaries (Swiss/Brussels/BMI) have really stepped up their presence on the Continent and I see Cairo being a major hub for STAR traffic. Egypt Air does need more US gateways ans should look for the US partners to code share and EXTEND their reach into the US (US/UAL/CO).
