American Airlines recently cancelled 3,300 flights to conduct inspections on MD-80 wiring bundles, the latest and most disruptive instance of temporary aircraft groundings by US airlines as FAA places greater scrutiny on compliance with airworthiness directives. Going forward, FAA should:

Remain vigilant and not worry about flight cancellations because safety comes first and precise compliance with ADs is paramount.
Stay tough but work with airlines to come up with inspection plans that avoid widespread groundings and keep flights operating; after all, AA insists there were no safety of flight issues with its MD-80s.
Revise ADs because current ADs are too complicated and exacting, making groundings inevitable if precise compliance with every provision of every AD is enforced.
Back off for a while; putting a scare into airlines was needed but now that several carriers have been forced to ground aircraft, their maintenance inspection programs are likely to be more thorough.
