China Eastern Airlines has appointed former VP Li Yangmin as president of the state-owned Shanghai-based carrier.

Li’s appointment is contrary to the widespread industry expectation that Wang Zhiqing, formerly deputy chief of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), would be appointed to the role.

Wang has instead been moved to several roles in the Ministry of Transport, including membership of its Communist Party committee.
