Moments missed if you weren’t at the ATW 41st Achievement Awards

RSS

As always, a great time was enjoyed Wednesday evening as the ATW publisher and editors hosted the 41st Annual Industry Achievement Awards in Washington DC.

You can read about the event, our winners, and what they said here.

But I’d like to share a few of my favorite moments of the ceremonies.

  • Ultra low cost carrier Spirit Airlines CEO Ben Baldanza gamely going along with a skit in which I “charged” him extra ancillary fees because he had a assigned seat, a glass of water and ate his dinner.
  • Heathrow Airport business development director Andy Garner in his onstage speech thanking his PR director for telling him it was a black tie event (it wasn’t, but Andy looked very elegant in tuxedo)
  • A huge cheer from the audience when the video citing the achievements of Leadership Excellence award winner former TSA Administrator John Pistole mentioned the expedited screening initiative TSA PreCheck.
  • Ethiopian Airlines CEO Tewolde Gebremariam explaining some of the many challenges that African carriers deal with, including fuel prices that have not dropped a cent despite the global drop in oil costs. And regulation that compels airlines flying from Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire, to Lome - a one and a half hour flight – takes 13 hours because they have to fly via Paris.

There was a wonderful atmosphere and we had a great set of truly industry-leading winners representing airlines, airports, alliances and companies around the world.

I encourage you to join us next year, in Singapore. Our formal submission form will be going online soon, but you can always email me direct. Karen.walker@penton.com
