Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) plans to launch a low-cost carrier (LCC) subsidiary, BUTA Airways. The new LCC, which will be based at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku, will fly Embraer aircraft—although the number and type have not been disclosed. Operations are expected to begin in fall 2017. In March 2016, AZAL operated flights on 13 routes under the AZALJET brand, which offers low-cost service, although it is not a separate entity.
