NAVBLUE’s N-Flight Planning solution is the type of technology innovation that falls behind the scenes, but which can make a huge difference in day-to-day operations for airlines, crew and passengers.
The N-Flight Planning tool represents an important advance in safety and efficiency in the global commercial airline industry.
NAVBLUE’S N-Flight solution is integrated with a flight planning algorithm and a Schneider Electric flight hazard forecast model. Combined, they provide flight crews with accurate advance warning of areas that may contain turbulence, icing or storms.
This technology allows flight crews to make informed decisions in their route planning while also saving fuel.
NAVBLUE’s technology also allows the tracking of aircraft and the ability to communicate globally every 15 minutes, or more frequently in distress situations.
NAVBLUE, an Airbus company, was pioneering in recognizing how to integrate these technologies and bring them to the aviation market.
One example of NAVBLUE technology at work and delivering results is Zurich International Airport, which is reporting that aircraft movements in low visibility conditions have increased 17% since October 2016. Working with Swiss air navigation services provider Skyguide and NAVBLUE, the airport installed an instrument landing system (ILS) 32-element localizer antenna supported by NAVBLUE’s ELISE (exact landing interface simulation environment) technology.
“Zurich airport is prone to low visibility conditions during the winter season, imposing unfavorable restrictions to traffic throughput,” Skyguide’s head of tower/approach Siegfrid Ladenbauer said. “By combining cutting-edge technology with advanced operational concepts, we were able to mitigate the meteorological impact on flight punctuality.”
Following the system’s installation, the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation approved Zurich airport to reduce the separation of arriving aircraft in low visibility conditions to five nautical miles instead of the traditional six nautical miles.
The 2017 ATW Aviation Technology Achievement Award goes to NAVBLUE.
