American Airlines will equip its Airbus A320 fleet with Airbus’ Runway Overrun Prevention System (ROPS). This onboard technology gives pilots increased awareness during landing and reduces the chances for runway excursions.

American has 130 Airbus A320neos on order.

The Airbus ROPS technology was approved by EASA on the Airbus A380 in October 2009 and is now in service on about 70% of the A380 fleet. ROPS is also part of the Airbus A350 XWB basic configuration and is being applied to other Airbus types, beginning with the A320 family, for certification later this year.

Airbus is working to make ROPS commercially available on aircraft from other manufacturers, as well.
