United Continental Holdings said on Monday said it would cut up to 500 jobs at the Houston headquarters of Continental Airlines, which merged in October with United Airlines (ATW Daily News, Oct. 4, 2010).
The cuts would be management and salaried positions. UCH has about 6,000 such jobs and more than 80,000 employees worldwide, Reuters reported. Information was contained in a letter to the Texas Workforce Commission, according to press reports.

By AnonymousAll CO jobs, I'm sure. What a mess Jeff brought on for CO. It's too bad the government can't do something about this "merger".
...that's a primary purpose
By Harry...that's a primary purpose of mergers...understood by all including the government...consolidate jobs, routes, structure
This will only be the
By TomThis will only be the beginning! Merger's are never good for airline employees...eventually, you will see CLE go all express with lower paying jobs. I assume IAD and IAH will be cut somewhat...look what happened when USAir merged with Piedmont...DAY...BWI...PIT all used to be hubs...GONE! UA will be competing with itself if it doesn't cut down on the hub and focus cities. So glad UA didn't go after the "ugly girl" but I do feel bad for CO and UA employees.
Branded as UA, the workforce
By AnonymousBranded as UA, the workforce will be down under 60,000 within 3 years, as one failed shuffling of assets after another fails. Ineptitude never emerges until a merger occurs. In the year that USAir Group ran US and PI as separate companies, Group made more money than in any year prior or after. Killing a brand and the team that supports it is insanity; the synergies are elsewhere as is the customer and brand loyalty.

By DemoPatriotIf you voted Republican you have no one to blame but yourself. Government do 'something'? Yea right. Ask your Conservative friends to help you - according to them, Government is the enemy - until you need a friend.

Not quite a 50% reduction,
By AnonymousNot quite a 50% reduction, but at least a 30% reduction in the Salaried and Management group.
These positions must be cut
By AnonymousThese positions must be cut in order to afford the 7 digit bonuses that Jeff and other remaining management will continue to receive. If they don't do this they will not meet their "targeted goals" (bonuses) inregard to synergies associated with the merger I don't have a problem with that (saving money), but their bonuses, stock options, incentives, and any salary increases should go to the employees that are loosing their jobs. NO ONE at United deserves more than 500k total annual compensation
If you want to see a successfully run company on less than a half a million a year to the CEO see ticker symbol LUV.

By BOHCAThere is a message here from the TWA/AA merger, regrettably nothing was changed after the buy-out of TWA.
The DL NW merger worked well.
By AnonymousThe DL NW merger worked well. The largest well, only cut in jobs were management positions. Its harder to place two of the same at that level. UA CO folks can only ride out the storm maybe they will follow the path DL NW did and actually hire more front line.
DemoPatriot...I couldn't
By AnonymousDemoPatriot...I couldn't agree more...in fact the day after the November elections the headlines read "Delta and Continental Win Labor Loses" with these election results.
These same employees who are hurt by these mergers and the outsourcing of maintenance, policies promoted by the Republicans, can only blame themselves for voting in Republican/Tea Party candidates.

Let business respond to
By AnonymousLet business respond to supply and demand. Not govt have red tape to regulate. Look at how aviation has expanded since govt got out of regulation. If there is a market, someone will emerge to serve it. Look at Allegiant Air, Southwest, etc. The reality is that the democrat-liberal dominated unions have killed much of American industry, not the "bad old republicans." Thank you tea party.
The merged CO UA airline has too many hubs, and too many overlapping employees. They will be gone soon, but the great part is, they can get another job or even better, start something new that might actually CREATE other jobs rather than rely on the government to "protect them."
People longing for the "good old days" really gets annoying, and should stick to airliners.net
The main focus of this merger
By AnonymousThe main focus of this merger is to benefit the few, not front line staff.
Ask the negotiators at UA re. a amended Ramp & Stores CBA. It's all about the eventual outsourcing of all Ramp & Stores work. This is why the IBT forced a extremely bad CBA on CA ramp workers, a CBA vote where only 50% of EE's covered voted on the CBA. And it passed by the unbelievable number of 84% voting yes. Never in the history of Airline CBA's has an agreement passed by this margin.
Which just shows that UACA holdings is in bed with the IBT to eliminate the Ramp & Stores jobs at "NEW United". And this will happen if the IBT not the IAM is elected to represent these groups
What this merger is really about is how much in bonuses Mgmnt., gives themselves.
Remember in less than 20 years UAL has had 6 CEO's, counting Jeff, this is incredible as it averages to a CEO change every 40 MONTHS.
This does not engender stability, especially when every one of them'
has a Platinum Parachute, this is after a generous signing bonus

By reeceThese cuts are Only The Beginning. CLE will be shutdown as soon as possible, and Mgmnt ISN'T Fooling anyone. CO should have NEVER jumped in bed with a dinosaur like United in the First place!. The CEO at CO needs his head examined.........it was ALL about Ego.
What does politics have to do
By AnonymousWhat does politics have to do with a company that just.merged to do what it needs to be more competitive? At least they are planning on cutting extra if duplicate management positions as opposed to decreasing wages at the lower levels. Continental and united pilots need to fight scope and keep the flying in house.
Your comment appears to be
By AnonymousYour comment appears to be driven by your anger not at the IBT contract that was agreed to by those CAL employees, but the fact that now they have a contract and it levels the playing field, i.e., they will have the same seniority driven job protections that you have at UAL. It also seems that you may be upset that they were able to negotiate better pay than you currently have, while your union, the IAM has failed to conclude any agreement for you. From published reports, seems that the IBT is well on it's way to a new agreement for the UAL mechanics and has already negotiated the return of jobs already; which appears to make your union the one with the problems.

By TiredoffurloughsMaybe the Teamsters have figured something out our guys havn't. Why didn't our IAM reps think ahead protect our jobs before those guys got a deal? Thanks alot. I guess we're gonna be on furlough even longer. Maybe IBT can do a better job bacasue IAM hasn't done us any good.
Anonymous, According to the
By AnonymousAnonymous,
According to the SWA 2010 Proxy, Gary Kelly, the CEO at Southwest Airlines made just under $1.6 million in total compensation in 2009 including over $1.0 million in cash compensation. In addition, both Ron Ricks (EVP) and Michael Van de Ven (EVP/COO) earned over $1.0 million, Robert Jordan (EVP) earned over $900K and Laura Wright (SVP/CFO) earned over $800K. I'm not suggesting that any of these people didn't earn this compensation and weren't deserving of it. I just think it's helpful to inject some facts when you make statements like, "If you want to see a successfully run company on less than a half a million a year to the CEO see ticker symbol LUV."
