Virgin Atlantic Airways and the British Air Line Pilots' Assn. representing the carrier's cockpit crewmembers reached an agreement resolving their dispute concerning time off for pilots, averting the possibility of strike action.

“Both sides have conducted talks that were frank, to the point and creative. Whilst the issue has created much debate, we are now happy with both the agreement and the ground that has been laid for our future relationship with the company,” said BALPA General Secretary Jim McAuslan.

Under the terms of the agreement, pilots will have the minimum 120 rostered days off a year or the “the equivalent of an office worker's weekends and bank holidays,” according to BALPA. In return, pilots will not be seeking compensation. “This was never a matter of money; it was always one of lifestyle,” McAuslan commented.

“In our discussions with the company, we have identified a range of relationships and processes that can be improved. We are looking forward to working with Virgin Atlantic on these matters to ensure that our industrial relations is on a more professional and progressive footing.”
