Japan Airlines and American Airlines applied Friday to the Japanese Transport Ministry for antitrust immunity to operate as if they are one airline for commercial purposes on flights between North America and Asia, while ANA, United Airlines and Continental Airlines filed a similar application for ATI with the ministry.
ATI applications from JAL/AA and ANA/UA/CA are pending with the US Dept. of Transportation (ATW Daily News, Feb. 15), and the US-Japan open skies accord reached late last year is in fact contingent on ATI approval for both groupings (ATW Daily News, Dec. 24).
"We are excited to have taken another defining step towards forging a closer relationship with our partner American Airlines so that we can combine strengths to offer our customers traveling on transpacific routes unprecedented convenience and flexibility," JAL President and COO Masaru Onishi said in a statement. "With the immunity, we can greatly enhance competition in this region of growth, including at the strategically located Haneda airport which will soon commence scheduled international flights" (ATW Daily News, June 7).

By AbushoraJapanese Transport Ministry for antitrust immunity to operate as if they are . Just to comment on the Grammar. Whenever there is (as if, there is a past). The correct English is as if they were and not as if they are.
That is....IF JAL survives.
By SamThat is....IF JAL survives. Moreover, it doesn't say much about JAL management is they are the type to allow themselves to be bullied into submission by a desperate AA.
JAL was a fool to not join with NW/DL.

A little late on this one.
By Ernest M. SchimmerA little late on this one. I've known all the
Air Cargo Mgrs at both Airlines at LAX. Just not familar with Mgrs on the passenger side. Now thinking about the Air Cargo Business, AA is not doing much in Air Cargo Sales in the U. S.and same on there International Flites. Here, again AA has no Upper Deck Air Cargo
lift and JL has pulled many of there freighter
flites. I still like to see more "Combi" Aircraft
in the Airline Schedules. Boeing could certainly work up a B7478M. "Combi". So, I am the Crazy Baja Gringo. Lets see what happens in the next few months Ernesto Schimmer
