CAAC deepens investigation of pilot qualifications

CAAC deepens investigation of pilot qualifications.

[Corrected version] CAAC, which has been conducting widespread safety inspections of China's airlines in the wake of last month's Henan Airlines Embraer 190 crash that killed 42, confirmed that an investigation carried out in 2008-09 revealed that more than 200 pilots had falsified their resumes. Of these, 103 were employed by Shenzhen Airlines, parent of Henan Airlines. The regulator noted that the vast majority of the pilots had been suspended, however, it added that this did not mean the problem had disappeared which is why it initiated a new round of investigations into pilot qualifications.

In addition to pilots, CAAC is also investigating aircraft mechanics, flight instructors and other aviation personnel and vowed to punish any disqualified personnel. In a recent meeting on the crash aftermath, CAAC Minister Li Jiaxiang called on Chinese carriers to "slow down pursuing commercial profit appropriately [and] give priority to improving safety level[s]."

In the crash aftermath, the Henan provincial government ordered the carrier to change its name back to Kunpeng Airlines to minimize damage to its image (ATW Daily News, Aug. 30).

Earlier this month, CAAC ordered China Express Air to suspend operations after the airline experienced a landing incident when the right wing of one of its CRJ200s scraped the runway at Guiyang in southwest China (ATW Daily News, Sept. 2). The regulator on Monday allowed the Guiyang-based carrier to resume half of its flight operations but still suspended its longer domestic routes owing to safety concerns.

By flyer

incredible that pilots would chance falsifying records, not only from a safety standpoint but in china they face serious punishment especially if an incident or accident occurs.Personally and certainly being unemployed or taking a lesser job would be a better alternative than facing the chinese penal system.

Get serious, boys. "Pencil

By Bruce Sanchez

Get serious, boys. "Pencil whipping" the logbook is so widespread here in the US that people have been caught logging more than 24 hours of flight time in a day. During the hiring hey day for regional carriers a few years ago, the percentage of valid logbooks was so low that most carriers gave up even reviewing them. Cheap tickets are the rule and truly qualified pilots prefer to get paid, thus killing the cheap tickets. We got what we paid for and so will the Chinese.

By Anonymous

Where's your sources? You're obviously not involved in flight training in the US. You can't get away with that here. Every American pilot that I know, including myself has integrity.

By NO kidding

i am not sure about others.. but I am HERE IN China.. and have witnessed several "fake captain experience" pilots myself...! (I will not reveal how i have confirmed it.. but I will say this. Such significant accusation on others was not taken lightly unless thorough due dilegence. was done.)

By Anonymous

And yet there are hundreds of expat pilots with many thousands of real hours in commercial jets that China won't hire because they are 60 years old.
This is what they get. You want young kids, but they don't have real experience.
