Bonn, Germany-based DHL Express placed a firm order for 14 Boeing 777 freighters valued at $4.7 billion at list prices, plus took purchase options for seven more 777Fs.

The order was announced at the Farnborough Air Show. DHL said the first four 777Fs from the order would be delivered in 2019. The cargo operator said the 14 freighters “are capacity neutral” and will be used to replace older aircraft, but are expected increase operational efficiency.

“While DHL Express in the past has chiefly been leasing aircraft to operate its global network … the purchase of fully owned freighter aircraft will improve the cost position of the DHL Express division going forward,” DHL said. It noted it will make pre-payments toward the order totaling €200 million ($234 million) this year.

The 777F has a range of 4,900 nm (9,070 km) and can carry a cargo load of up to 102 tons
Boeing noted that “a portion of the order was previously unidentified on Boeing’s Orders & Deliveries website.”
