Flight Sciences International and Pratt & Whitney are collaborating to set up EcoFlight Solutions, a comprehensive fuel conservation service that analyzes airline operations, identifies savings, drives implementation and tracks results. EcoFlight Solutions is offered through Pratt’s Global Service Partners network. According to the engine manufacturer, the service typically can save an airline 3% to 8% in fuel costs annually, even for airlines with fuel conservation programs already in place, adding $20-$50 million a year to the bottom line for a mid-size carrier.

UK-based emissions verification specialist CICS warns that many airlines still have much work to do to meet important forthcoming deadlines for the EU's Emissions Trading Scheme. CICS Director Shaun Bainbridge said, “With the monitoring of emissions starting in January this year, aircraft operators must be ready to have their data independently verified in time for the reporting deadline of 31 March 2011. Understanding the best way to undertake monitoring, verification and reporting of CO2 can be a complex task. Aircraft operators must be careful to ensure that this is done satisfactorily if they want to take full advantage once carbon trading comes into play.”

CICS said it has become one of the first verification bodies to be recommended to receive accreditation by the UK Accreditation Service to provide greenhouse gas verification of tonne-kilometer and emissions data for aircraft operators under the EU ETS.

Pratt & Whitney signed an agreement for a two-year extension with JetBlue Airways for its EcoPower engine washes on the airline's fleet of V2500 and CF34 engines. JetBlue commenced washes last year at New York JFK,Fort Lauderdale and OrlandoInternational and has options to expand the service to 13 additional airport locations. According to JetBlue VP-Technical Operations Dave Ramage, the airline has saved an estimated 4 million lb. of fuel and eliminated more than 5,600 tonnes of CO2emissions using Pratt's EcoPower engine wash service.
