Chorus of Resistance

As the deadline for the start of the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme looms, the chorus of criticism is reaching a crescendo. Last month there were calls for the EU to withdraw plans to impose a unilateral ETS on non-EU airlines from the Arab Air Carriers Organization (AACO) at its annual meeting in Abu Dhabi.

“Unilateral and regional environmental initiatives, which ignore the boundaries of their jurisdiction, such as the European Emissions Trading Scheme, will not succeed in resolving the environmental issue,” AACO secretary general Abdul Wahab Teffaha said.

He reiterated that the matter should be addressed by ICAO.

To give Arab airlines more power to fight the EU ETS, AACO is calling on the Arab Civil Aviation Commission to form an Arab position regarding the “illegitimacy of applying the European Union scheme on non-EU airlines,” according to Teffaha.

The move by the AACO follows the US House of Representatives overwhelming vote on Monday, Nov. 7 for the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme Prohibition Act of 2011, which forbids US carriers from participating in the EU ETS. The bill also instructs US officials to negotiate or “take any action necessary” to ensure US aviation operators are not penalized by “any unilaterally imposed” EU scheme.

Teffaha stressed that Arab airlines support a global ETS if the revenues collected are used to improve the environmental footprint of aviation and not to fill “government coffers.”

Typical European (led by the French I suppose), they are going bankrupt and wants the rest of world to pay for it using the revenues from the ETS. That is a good way to kill competition.

Air pollution by air traffic

By keesje

Air pollution by air traffic grows about 3-4% per year. If we would not introduce new aircraft / engines it would be even worse.

More then 70% of passengers are fun tourists.

We better bluntly ignore / deny / fight / forget this & fly as much as possible anyway. The others do it too, so..

And yes, I'm a qualified earospace engineer.

So basically, the idea is to tax air travel to the point that it is once again available to only the rich. If only the rich can fly, then we'll need less aircraft, and we'll generate less carbon emissions. There will also be fewer of us working in aviation. If we apply this principle across the entire economy, only the rich will be able to afford anything that creates a carbon footprint. EU ETS does nothing to save the environment, but is simply a means of generating tax revenues, in other words, wealth redistribution.

By Pierre

@ Anonymous: Flying will not be, once again, reserved to the rich individuals. If we take the example of Lufthansa, they estimate that this tax will cost them around EUR 130 millions, representing less than 1% of their revenue.
Furthermore, the term "tax" is not adequate because an airline would only have to pay a given amount of money when it would reject more carbon. In addition to that, if an airline does respect the limit of carbon emission fixed by the EU, it will be rewarded by having the possibility to sell its' surplus, thus making profit thanks to this system. This measure is made to encourage airlines to adopt a more eco-friendly strategy and will stimulate the entire aerospace industry thus creating jobs.
