Friday September 5, 2008Argentine Senate authorized the renationalization of Aerolineas Argentinas by a 46-21 vote. The legislature now will negotiate the purchase price for AR and its Austral Lineas Aereas subsidiary (ATWOnline, Aug. 26).
Conviasa 737 crash kills crew
Wednesday September 3, 2008Conviasa 737-200 crashed Saturday on a positioning flight, killing the three crewmembers onboard. The aircraft had been stored in Caracas and was being ferried to a new owner in Latacunga, Ecuador, when it flew into the side of the Iliniza volcano, Flight Safety Foundation's Aviation Safety Network reported. The JT8D-9A-powered aircraft first flew in 1978.

Friday August 29, 2008TAM announced a revision to its international growth plan comprising the addition of two 767-300s to its fleet before year end, meaning it will close the year with 125 aircraft in operation. During the remainder of 2008 it will launch Sao Paulo Guarulhos-Lima, GRU-Orlando International, Belo Horizonte-Miami and Rio de Janeiro Galeao-New York JFK.
Thursday August 28, 2008Embraer signed a five-year collaborative inventory parts service contract with Chinese regional Kunpeng Airlines to manage the supply and distribution of spare parts.
Separately, it has begun training pilots, cabin staff and technicians employed by Brazilian startup Azul Linhas Aereas, which is scheduled to launch operations in January. Azul has 36 E-195s on firm order plus 20 options and 20 purchase rights (ATWOnline, May 7).
Aerolineas Argentinas renationalization passes first legislative hurdle
Tuesday August 26, 2008Grupo Marsans' planned sale of Aerolineas Argentinas and its Austral subsidiary to the Argentine government (ATWOnline, July 18) moved forward after the lower house of the national congress, the Chamber of Deputies, approved the renationalization last week. AR was privatized in 1991 and reportedly is carrying debt of around $900 million. The Chamber of Deputies approved the measure by a 167-79 vote, according to press reports. The Senate is scheduled to discuss the bill, which sets out the conditions and price for acquisition of the troubled carriers, this week. It must approve the bill for it to become law.
Tuesday August 26, 2008TAM Cargo yesterday opened a new 2,160-sq.-m. airfreight terminal in Manaus with 80 tons of storage capacity. The facility has exclusive areas for different types of cargo and cold storage for perishables, TAM said. "The new terminal can handle nearly 35% more freight than its predecessor in addition to allowing for expansion in coming years depending on market demand," according to the airline.
Wednesday August 20, 2008Embraer and Aeromexico Connect signed a long-term service agreement supporting the carrier's growing fleet of ERJ-145s and E-190s. Contract covers more than 500 part numbers and includes landing gear overhauls on the -145s.
