Air Arabia's Nepalese subsidiary to suspend operations

Wednesday July 2, 2008

FlyYeti.com, the low-cost joint venture between Air Arabia and Yeti Airlines operating out of Kathmandu, will suspend operations on July 16 owing to what it called "difficult operating conditions in Nepal and a presently opaque regulatory environment" and political conditions that made it impossible to guarantee the renewal of aircraft operating leases that expire this month. Launched in January, FlyYeti.com said it "has enjoyed a pleasant performance" and 80% load factors and that it "will continue to closely monitor the political and market conditions in the country and hopes to resume operations when those conditions stabilize."

Sterling Airlines no longer will staff bases permanently at Aalborg, Billund, Malmo and Gothenburg Landvetter from Jan. 1 and will focus on its operations at Copenhagen, Stockholm Arlanda and Oslo Gardermoen, the LCC announced yesterday. "Both the management and the unions of Sterling Airlines are working together to avoid dismissals," it said, claiming the decision was made "in order to concentrate its efforts and make the company more efficient." Affected employees who do not accept a voluntary redundancy package will be relocated to the three remaining bases, although Sterling will continue to fly to the airports. "This demands that we gather our operations around the three central bases while allocating more resources to updating our fleet and optimizing our routes," President and CEO Reza Taleghani said. "We are designing the [voluntary redundancy] plans to be attractive enough to attract the necessary number of employees."

SkyEurope Airlines added Vienna-based ASP as an investor. The firm purchased 7.24% of the LCC on the bourse for approximately €7 million ($10.9 million). EasyJet expanded its Milan Malpensa operation with an 11th based aircraft and announced it will base two additional aircraft at MXP by the beginning of the winter schedule. Aircraft will fly on new routes to Copenhagen, Stockholm Arlanda, Sofia, Brindisi and Lamezia Terme. In addition, it will increase frequencies to Barcelona, Naples, Amsterdam and Paris Charles de Gaulle in October. It opened its MXP base in March 2006 and last year carried 2.2 million passengers through the airport. It expects 3.5 million this year and by January 2009 plans to base 15 aircraft in Milan. It claims its 19% share at MXP makes it the airport's largest airline, ahead of Alitalia's 14%.

Separately, easyJet introduced an online facility allowing passengers to purchase an extra weight allowance for hold baggage in advance of their flight. Extra weight will be available at a rate of £15 ($29.63) per 3 kg. At check-in it will cost £18 per 3 kg.
