Continental employees, former Concorde officials to stand trial in Paris crash

CACC moves forward on 'jumbo aircraft' project
Friday July 4, 2008Commercial Aircraft Corp. of China has begun evaluating potential aircraft types, size, market outlook, customer support, certification and other parameters for the country's proposed "jumbo aircraft" program and further details are expected to be disclosed soon, AVIC I revealed. CACC Vice GM Wu Guanghui has said the manufacturer will consider starting with a "single-aisle, 150-seat aircraft. . .similar to the A320 or 737" (ATWOnline, May 26).
AVIC I and AVIC II, both stakeholders in CACC, have sent around 200 experts to participate in the evaluation work, which is expected to take about six months. A report will be submitted to the CACC board and Beijing for approval. Subsequently, the company will begin to draft an aircraft design, contact suppliers to bid for parts and firm up details regarding engines, avionics and production materials. AVIC I subsidiaries Xi'an Aircraft Industry Co., Shenyang Aircraft Corp. and Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Co. and AVIC II subsidiaries Shaanxi Aircraft Industry Co. and Harbin Aircraft Industry Group have been chosen to be the five domestic producers of large commercial aircraft.
In addition to these state-owned enterprises, some privately run companies and foreign entities have shown an interest in participating. Guangdong Changsheng Aircraft Design Co. is one of them. Zhou Jisheng, the former deputy chief designer of the ARJ21 and current MD and chief designer at Changsheng, expressed hope that his company will play a significant part in the process.
Friday July 4, 2008Boeing delivered 126 commercial aircraft in the second quarter, up 10.5% from the 114 delivered in the three months ended June 30, 2007. Deliveries comprised 100 737NGs (compared to 86 in the year-ago quarter), five 747s (compared to four), three 767s (three) and 18 777s (21). Year-to-date deliveries totaled 241, up 9.5% from 220.
Separately, Boeing announced delivery of a 737-800 to Canada's Sunwing Airlines. Aircraft will be operated on lease from Aviation Capital Group. Sunwing will lease a second from ACG next year, at which time its fleet will comprise 15 -800s.

Russian company to launch new large transport
Thursday July 3, 2008Russia's Irkut Corp. announced plans to develop a new large transport as a successor to the Tu-154, with certification planned for 2015. The MC-21 will be offered in three models seating 150-210 passengers. Irkut said $65.5 million will be invested in preparation of the draft design and the subsequent launching of conceptual design work, with a total of $3 billion "earmarked for the implementation of the project." The aircraft will be manufactured at the Irkutsk Aviation Plant with a production capability of 5-6 aircraft per month.
Program development will be headed by Irkut and its subsidiary Yakovlev OKB Design Bureau, a systems integrator. Among other companies planning to participate are Ilyushin, Tupolev, Beriev and Sukhoi. Irkut said it soon will put out a tender to select suppliers of components and systems including engines and avionics. In a statement, it said it hopes that "along with Russian companies, world leading manufacturers such as Pratt & Whitney, Rolls-Royce, Snecma, Honeywell, Rockwell Collins, Thales and others will be interested in the tender."
Irkut is producing components and subassemblies for the A320, A330/A340 and A380 and also is partnered with Airbus on the A320 passenger-to-freighter conversion program. In late 2005 EADS bought a 10% stake in the company for $65.3 million (ATWOnline, Jan. 5, 2006).

Alenia completes 787 horizontal stabilizer destructive testing

Wednesday July 2, 2008Rockwell Collins reached agreement with Xiamen Airlines to provide a suite of avionics for 12 737NGs with an option for 25 more. Technology includes WXR-2100 MultiScan Hazard Detection System aimed at reducing pilot workload and enhancing safety. Deliveries are scheduled to begin next year and continue through 2013.
