Farewell Flight: United Air Lines’ flight crew bids farewell to Convair 340 airplane at San Francisco International Airport after its final flight. United retired the last of its twin-engine propellor planes March 1, to be replaced by larger and faster aircraft. Crew on the last flight included (left to right) First Officer E. P. Akin, stewardesses Bonnie Lawrence and Sandi Tank, and Captain H. G. Watts. United’s Convair fleet, workhorse of the pre-jet era, has carried 16 million passengers about 171 million miles since entering service in 1952.
