Air Transport World has been bringing you news on the management of the world’s airlines since May 1964. We feel very honored and pleased to celebrate this milestone of 50 years of publishing with our readers.
In my blog over the next several months I will be sharing events that occurred around the time that ATW published its first issue.
For this Time Capsule, I want to share some of the contents of that first issue. In our first World Airline Report, we reported that world airline revenues topped $7 billion in 1963. These numbers did not include Russia or China. ICAO was the provider of the data, and the world market percentage breakout was as follows: North America 58.8%; Europe 25.6%; South America 4.6%; Asia 4.6%; Australia 3.1; Africa 2.0. It is amazing to see how these percentages have changed. Asia-Pacific currently, which includes Australia, is slightly higher than Europe. North America has shrunk considerably, and is down in the 30s in world percentage.
United Air Lines led the list of Top 25 for 1963 data, with having the most passengers (12.4 million), the most RPMs (9.2 billion), the biggest fleet (260 aircraft) and the most employees (32,325). Pan Am carried the most freight with 200 million freight ton-miles.
There was a feature on a Rolls-Royce Dart modification for the General Dynamics Convair 340/440 and 240 series for short-haul modernization.
Another article discussed the importance of jet operations approval at LaGuardia and its redevelopment and revitalization by the Port Authority of NY.
There were other articles covering all sorts of data by airline and by aircraft type to features on avionics, US-Canada bilateral talks, FAA rules, the development of the SST, and a look at Aeroflot and Braniff International Airlines.
