Hungarian-based Wizz Air (W6) announced it will invest HUF25 billion ($100 million) into expanding its Budapest operations after state-owned Malev Hungarian Airlines ceased operations Friday (ATW Daily News, Feb. 6).

W6 said it will add two Airbus A320s at the base in March, representing a 66% increase in capacity. It expects yearly passengers carried to reach 2 million—up 42.9% over its previous estimate of 1.4 million.

It will also launch one new route—3X-weekly Budapest-Bucharest—and will increase frequencies to London Luton, Brussels Charleroi, Eindhoven, Milan Bergamo, Rome, Barcelona, Malmo, Madrid, Stockholm Skavsta, Bourgas, Bari, Dortmund, Gothenburg, Tirgu Mures, Frankfurt Hahn, Naples, Bologna Forli, Turku, Catania, Pisa, Palma de Mallorca, Corfu and Antalya.

Between the new route and the increased frequencies, the carrier’s weekly flights will nearly double from 67 to 129.

W6 operates a fleet of 34 A320 aircraft from 15 bases.

"Wizz Air remains highly committed to Hungary, our homeland,” W6 CEO József Váradi said. “We have been growing year-on-year since the start of operation in 2004. We will continue to meet the increase in consumer demand and continue to offer new jobs in Budapest.”

Sorry to see that you are

By Patrick

Sorry to see that you are falling for the Ryanair-inspired redefinition of the word "invest". Wizz Air is deploying some more of its fleet in Budapest, and good luck to it. Unless I missed something, though, it is not buying new aircraft to do so, which is what the term "investment" would really signify. And even if it were buying two new A320s, it would be unlikely to be paying the list prices which the catchy $100m figure implies. I enjoy and appreciate ATW's coverage of the industry, but in a case like this, please can you apply some critical analysis rather than just uncritically swallowing the public-relations pitch?

With all due respect,

By Phil

With all due respect, "invest" does not necessarily mean an investment of capital or purchase of new aircraft. Invest here refers moving into add capacity due to an airline that failed. It is not ATW's job to provide critical analysis here, it is merely providing news and information on a timely basis.

Unlike the mass-merchandised

By Frank B

Unlike the mass-merchandised media, ATW reports the facts as they are passed along to them, that's what we call "News" and that's why I read it. I don't care about anyone's critical analysis but my own. Thank you ATW for doing a splendid job reporting the ATI news every day.
