Russia’s Transaero Airlines has signed a codeshare agreement with Taiwan’s China Airlines on the Moscow-Bangkok-Taipei route.

Transaero CEO Dmitry Stolyarov told ATW the carrier has plans to establish a direct Moscow-Taipei flight. According to Stolyarov, Transaero operates more than 20 scheduled flights per week from Russia’s largest cities to Bangkok. The codeshare, which was signed for only Moscow-Bangkok flights, will be expanded to routes from Russian regions.

Russia and Taiwan have not established diplomatic relations. Experts say authorities in mainland China do not oppose direct flights between Russia and Taiwan if they are operated by private carriers.

Transaero received rights for a Moscow-Taipei route in the mid-1990s, but flights ceased after a short period due to a lack of demand.
