United Airlines and Continental Airlines yesterday unveiled their post-merger livery, which features the "United" name in block capital letters on the fuselage but utilizes CO's logo and colors including its blue-gold-white globe image on the tail.
"Both airlines have earned strong brand recognition in one of the world’s most visible and highly competitive businesses," the companies said in a statement. "The new visual identity builds upon the significant value of each airline’s current brand, while advancing the combined airline’s future brand image."
UA and CO expect to complete the merger transaction by year's end (ATW Daily News, May 3). CO Chairman, President and CEO Jeff Smisek will be CEO of the combined airline.

Whenever you try to
By AnonymousWhenever you try to compromise, most of the times the result is: no one is happy. I can understand why they've picked this "new" livery and how it makes sense to give the impresseion that you are pleasing everyone, but in fact the result is quite dull, weird and it shows an incredible lack of imagination and flexibility...are these the values the new merged airline is going to be built upon?

By stfyr51I don't think we EVER has the logo right from the early 90's when Wolfe came on Board. Especially that putrid Grey with that small logo on the Tail. I think the Globe looks as good as anything we've had in Years. And if it make the CAL guys Happy?? It's Priceless!

By Bruce DrumActually this is not the first time UA and CO have worked together and produced a joint livery. Back in the 1950s CO operated a Douglas DC-6B in the main CO livery but with joint titles on their interchange agreement. Here is a picture of this joint livery, 1950s style:

By GregI feel this is a perfect livery for both airlines. Both parties have a large amount of history and this still preserves the legacy and image of both in their own way. Why change something for a "new direction" for the sake of creating eye candy? Most mergers usually take the livery of the dominating airline (American/TWA, USAir/America West, Delta.NWA...etc) yet they come up with this combination honoring both airlines and yet people want something new. For what? To take pictures of or just make one for the sake of change? It's a great mix and I applaud what they are doing.

The new revised post-merger
By AnonymousThe new revised post-merger livery looks better but not by much. Hopefully, when Continental Airlines and United Airlines eventually get the merger intregration process completely squared away, the new United Airlines will adopt a new far more radical livery to reflect the future. By khawaja javaidLogo on the tail, name on the fuslage means nothing.Only thing matters is, will it be a world class ailine or not.United have very poor reputation in customer service.CO and UA both have very poor relations with the distribution channels,United is the worst. They are already raising fares,They have already made it impossible with Lufthansa to travel international on International routes.United and Continental have taken out the inventory from smaller cities all across the nation.DOT have no clue what airlines are doing.IATA is also a social club of world airlines, for photo sessions.Airlines rules are written by brainless people.Airlines fares are rising, customer service is vanishing.Within three to five years wolrd major airlines will become smaller.Lufthansa,British Airways,KLM,Aifrance will be shrinking further.

By JonThis is soo poor. Instead of taking the opportunity to come up with a fresh, new Corporate Identity for the integrated airline, they they do this pathetic "okay-my -name-and-your-logo" compromise approach, as if anybody would really care that much if one of the brands disappeared altogether. I guess after spending all that money on new aircraft and executive salaries, there wasn't anything left for a graphic designer!

As a retired airline employee
By AnonymousAs a retired airline employee from another airline, I congratulate both CO and UA for merging. As an analyst, this would be profitable, merging operations always cut expenses, offering older employees early retirement with benefits will cut operating expenses tremendously. The older the airline gets the more expensive to operate due to higher salaries of senior employees. TWA did not do anything about it so they folded. WN did it so they are still profitable. I like both UA and CO, good relationship with them.
Dull, Boring, Stale at best.
By Argh !Dull, Boring, Stale at best. Really, new company, new uniforms, same mindset. This airline should be standing out for its' supposedly dynamic merger. So many good ideas from the employees, none to be taken.SOS. Nothing new here. Just another grab and run !

While I can appreciate all
By pgwroxWhile I can appreciate all the different viewpoint, I have to agree with the present livery, I like the "new" look. During my 39-year carreer as a Service Director in Canada, I went through five mergers! While a different look might have been better, at this point in time, it shows the employees of both CO & UA they are both equal in value and only such attitude can help this merger go through successfully. Too many times, I have seen "we" against "you" which created a bitter work environment, do the detriment of the customers. Maybe a new look can be introduced in a few years, after the merged companies have developped their own "personality".
As for the comment about retiring older f/a', that is sexist and age discrimination. F/a's usually reach top salary after 7-10 years, after which time the salary never increases; if one were to agree with that view, then all f/a's should retire after 7-10 years! Can you imagine the training costs and all the lost experience?
Yeah, but livery is only
By AnonymousYeah, but livery is only paint. In a couple of years that too could go away along with the CO staff, then where is the merger of equals? The merger is what it is, it's inevitable to the small people of each company, but please don't insult our intelligence and call this a merger of equals! If this were equal we would take the name of the company that has to move, Chicago was chosen so Continental should live on.

By pgwroxre:Yeah, but livery is only..."
No offense intended, but I have been there many times, and your views reflect exactly what I, as well as all concerned, went through. One's loss of identity is never easy, but over time, things will settle down; the unions will work out the seniority issue, the most contentious of all. I went through it; one was "date of hiring" for everyone (and very quickly did we learn to all work together) and the other on a "date of hiring" basis for a certain (senior) group) and prorated for the other. For this group the bitterness will last forever.
I can only wish all the best to all concerned, and part with this word of advice: "Learn to know each other, and learn from each other".
After all, we are professionals in our chosen career.

By SunnyDelta won't admit it...but this is exactly what they did when NW took over Delta (NW management). Kept the Delta name, created a RED compass/Widget (pointing NW).
It would have served them better to have kept that fantastic looking Pearl color of NW.
This new look will serve the new United well.

I would like to point out
By CabinCrewI would like to point out that USAirways was taken over by America West and the name was changed to USAirways based on the East Coast impact and not the other way round as suggested above. The new brand at US is very well done with a mix of both the America West and the US colors but updated.
Back to the story at hand.
When Continental launched this branding it was a breath of fresh air for the airline as they had made it through some tough times and needed a new image. It has served them well and is very global hence the tail.. I would imagine that United after just spending a ton of money rebranding their image with a new look was not wanting to spend the money on yet again another new livery. In good keeing with what is the brand with the better image they kept the CO colors and added the name United which very much suggests the new airline is a United airline... I agree its not very imaginative and could have been better.. BUT it could have been a lot worse also.
It looks fresh yet confusing.. but I think it will work for a while.
Well, everyone is entitled to
By ChuckWell, everyone is entitled to an opinion, so here is mine. This sucks! I love the new UAL colors. As a former employee for over 34 years, I saw a few liverys come and go. The horrible orange, red, blue. The equally bad "Wolf" grey/blue. They finally have a great new scheme and they are ditching it for the ugly Continental colors. Boo! Keep the globe tail and the main UAL color scheme. Much better!
PS - one thing the DO need to
By CabinCrewPS - one thing the DO need to change are the uniforms for both airlines. Delta did it for the merger and the Crews are very happy with the result.
The current CO and UA uniforms need a fresh look and will make the crews and ground staff feel much better about the merger. ;-)
A few out there have already
By AnonymousA few out there have already noted this but this scheme was chosen because it was the least expensive of all the possibilities set before management.

By AnonymousDon't get all worked up, folks. This logo is obviously an interim idea to paint as many planes as quickly as possible.
No doubt when the new airlines gets its fleet issues worked out, they'll come up with a new, neutral livery.

Well for those that work for
By AnonymousWell for those that work for both United and Continental I am sure you not going to make the majority happy regardless of the logo/paint design. And at the end of the day to the people it matters to the most, the people that pay the airline employees salary, their customers, all they (we) want the most is an airline that....
A) ... is safe
B) ... runs on time
C) ....fares that are affordable and make for a good value
D) ... at least a little respect and appreciation from the employees, in other words a good experience
Give me those things and I really don't care if you paint the planes "dark purple" with silly pink, blue, green strips around the tail of the airplane (that's a trivia question).

CO with 335 aircraft & UA
By FrankCO with 335 aircraft & UA with 360, it's likely a simple matter of a "quick fix" for now & a more permanent livery after the dust settles, which in this case will likely be several years. As a frequent CO passenger, I just hope the CO attitude, courtesy and smiles prevail.

By Air enthusiastThe logo and color scheme are no big deal. United changes its colors every decade or so. I'm sure that the new management decided that this was the most economical and "equitable" color scheme for now which best preserves brand recognition of both carriers among the public.

By Anja GenselA train wreck is still a train wreck, no matter how you package it! This is a disasterous deal for consumers, employees and the cities served by these two airlines.
I was opposed to the idea of cabatoge (allowing foriegn airlines to operate domestically within the USA), but after this, I look forward to likes of CX, BA and LH operating a domestic network. The only other mergers that should be allowed from here on, are ones that make sense in the respect of growing the route network with little-to-no overlap, matching service formats, employee equality, and consumer benefit.
So now, the next logical step in US airline industry is a merger between Southwest and AirTran, and between JetBlue and Spirit.
