Malev Hungarian Airlines stops operations

Hungarian state-owned Malev Hungarian Airlines (MA) ceased all operations early on Feb. 3 saying its cash flow situation had become “untenable” after its partners lost trust in the carrier and began demanding advance payments for their services.

An MA source told ATW the oneworld alliance carrier was also unable to pay a passenger-ticket-insurance, a value of €30 million ($39.5 million).

The government put the 95% state-owned carrier into bankruptcy protection Jan. 30 (ATW Daily News, Feb. 1). On Tuesday the government created a fund of HUF2 billion ($9.04 million) for the thousands of travelers who would become stranded if the airline ceased operations.

“Unfortunately, the event occurred which we had a greatest fear of and we wanted to avoid ... our partners lost their trust due to the information published in the last days and they started to ask for payment of their services in advance. This speeded up the cash outflow and the situation of the airline became untenable,” the carrier said.

CEO Loránt Limburger said the owner was “unable to provide additional financial resources to operate after the EU decision” earlier this year calling on the carrier to repay the equivalent of up to $350 million in illegal state aid between 2007 and 2010 (ATW Daily News, Jan. 10).

MA posted a loss of $110 million in 2010. Hungarian prime-minister Viktor Orban said in several media outlets that he wanted to rescue the financially troubled carrier and the state needed a functional home carrier. He said the decision to ground the airline came after two aircraft were not allowed to take off from Tel Aviv and Dublin because of its debts.

Meanwhile, several European carriers, such as Lufthansa and Air Berlin, have announced they will add services and frequencies to Budapest (BUD). MA accounts for 40% of the annual turnover at BUD.

MA has 2,600 employees and a fleet of 22 aircraft—a mix of Bombardier Q400s and Boeing 737NGs.

It is the second European mainline carrier to cease operations in one week. Barcelona-based Spanair stopped operations after reportedly running out of financing options Jan. 28 (ATW Daily News, Jan. 27).

Oneworld said in a statement it was assisting customers affected by MA’s suspension of services.

No official word from oneworld about what happens with the miles and more important with the status of duna club members. They were just very fast in taking out the malev logo frm their website...no contact or whatsoever is provided to clear questions. Oneworld is past, star alliance will take over hungary, and I am sure they will know how to honour duna club status members.

Well, I'm an airline

By Anonymous

Well, I'm an airline hobbyist, not a financier, and have been since the seventies-the glory days-and from my perspective, this is culturally sad. Like Sabena, Swissair, Braniff, Pan Am, Eastern and the rest, Malev will be missed. The story didn't mention that Ryanair is setting up shop immediatley. And as a hobbyist, Ryanair is like a parasite. Eeech.

Well this is no surprise, the Eastern European airlines have a record of failures, Sky Europe, Air Slovakia, Slovak Airlines and CSA Czech Airlines is in deep trouble as well, only surviving on 'subsidies' through its ownership, questionable ownership by the Prague Airport Authority, which the EU should and must investigate.
All airlines failed to change with the market and have established a value proposition for their customers, except WIZZ which is going to eat up the competition there, as Tarom is in trouble, Balkan is gone, JAT is gone, Adria is trouble, Croatian in trouble, its all a big mess ! down to poor management, simple as that.

It is a shame that so many of the State Owned Carriers have collapsed and only the super Mega Carriers are able to survive. I do like Lufthansa and BA but Malev represented Hungary and its People.

By George

Nobody seemed to bother to mention the role the Russian Bank played in bankrupting Malev.
And the IATA ... did nothing to help the stranded passengers and kept the millions of dollars posted by the airline as security deposits.

By Bill J

I flew Malev once while on a trip to Hungary, took off from BUD and went to Athen's on a 737. It was a late evening flight and I even remember the cockpit door being open most of the flight, in 1995. It's the one and only ride I'll ever have on Malev, hopefully some of their employees and flight crews can be picked up by other carriers coming into the country.
