ATW names Air New Zealand 2012 Airline of the Year

Air Transport World has selected Air New Zealand as the 2012 Airline of the Year in the ATW 38th Airline Industry Achievement Awards.

This year’s ATW Airline Industry Achievement Awards winners also include AirAsia (Value Airline of the Year); QantasLink (Regional Airline of the Year); All Nippon Airways (Airline Technology Leadership); former IATA DG Giovanni Bisignani (Decade of Excellence); Etihad Airways (Passenger Service); Transaero Airlines (Airline Market Leadership); and Alaska Airlines (Joseph S. Murphy Industry Service).

Air New Zealand has risen to the top tier of the industry in a host of areas, including market position, product innovation, yield and social media to make the airline an industry trendsetter. ATW editors also cited Air New Zealand’s commitment to operating a very young and highly fuel-efficient fleet. The carrier becomes a twice winner of the Airline of the Year award.

Inaugural winner of a new category, Value Airline, is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-based AirAsia, which paved the way for low-cost air travel in the region.

Australia’s QantasLink is Regional Airline of the Year for its perfect safety record and longstanding commitment to delivering excellent customer service to remote and hostile regions of Australia.

The Airline Technology Leadership award goes to ANA for its role in the development and design of the Boeing 787, for which it is the launch customer.

This year, the editors introduced a Decade of Excellence award to recognize an individual’s outstanding contribution to the airline industry. The inaugural winner is former IATA DG Giovanni Bisignani, who crafted some of the greatest changes seen in the industry, such as introducing the IATA Operational Safety Audit.

Etihad Airways received the Passenger Service award for excellent customer service product and offering of a premium service across all cabins.

The Airline Market Leadership award goes to Transaero Airlines and recognizes the carrier's sustained growth that has made it Russia’s second largest carrier.

Seattle-based Alaska Airlines receives the Joseph S. Murphy Industry Service Award for its numerous environmental and corporate-giving initiatives through charities such as the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Angel Flight West, Special Olympics, and Shriners Hospitals for Children.

ATW editors will present the awards at a Gala Awards Presentation Dinner Feb.13 at the Pan Pacific in Singapore.

OMG, have the judges flown

By Anonymous

OMG, have the judges flown with ANZ. The flights are expensive (no real competition between NZ and USA), the ground staff are rude, and the seat layout in economy on the long-haul flights is marginal.

What a travesty.

By Mike Kirke

Air NZ, is a good airline, probably not the best , but certainly there are a lot worse airlines operating than Air NZ.

I recently flew with AirNZ and was amazed by everything. The staff were very professional, the plane was BEAUTIFUL with all black trimming (quite befitting) and I enjoyed my flight very much. I was taken away by the how beautiful Auckland Airport was too - one of the best airports in the world (top ten I believe). Very well done NZ!!

Well deserved!! Ive recently flown with AirNZ and was amazed by everything. The staff I foudn to be quite professional and the plans itself was BEAUTIFUL ... loved the black trimming, quite befitting. Flight experience was awesome and didnt want to get off the plane when I arrived at my destination. Auckland Airport too is breathtaking. One of the best airports in the world (top ten I believe). Very well done NZ, keep up the good work!

Are you serious? I'm a Kiwi

By Anonymous

Are you serious? I'm a Kiwi but Air Nz is one of the worst airlines I've flown. Crew and ground staff are grumpy, and look like they wish they were somewhere else, even on Business class, and the new 777-300ER economy class is 10 abreast whereas the industry standard is 9 abreast thus meaning decreased seat width which makes it even worse for a 13 hour flight to Los Angeles

Have YOU flown with ANZ

By Anonymous

Have YOU flown with ANZ often?
Its a fantastic airline with helpful and dedicated staff who offer unparalleled service? Try getting a smile out of a Qantas/American Airlines staff member that isn't dripping with acidic disdain.

I fly with Air New Zealand whenever I can, even when there is a cheaper airline about purely because of their dedication to the whole flying experience. Their ground staff are lovely, efficient and helpful and their inflight options are unrivalled anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.

Anonymous; I think you need to spend a little less time online and a take a good look at airline service around the world and you too will realise what an asset AirNZ really is to the industry as a whole.

I have flown Air NZ to the States 4 times in 18 months and I have no idea what you're talking about. All staff are friendly and helpful and seating/pricing isn't any worse than any other airline. It is by far the best out there. You just sound bitter!

I could not agree more with

By Anonymous

I could not agree more with the previous comments, and obviously they never interviewed either passengers or staff, who have the lowest morale possible due to total mismanagement. Awarding a so-called prestigious award to a second-rate airline (who have some very old aircraft) denigrates the whole idea and is an insult to those airlines who actually meet the criteria.

I have to agree. This airline is truly returning to the spirit and the glamor of my boyhood. Thanks!

By Alastair Higham-Lee

I completely disagree with your comments - given you haven't placed your name and are happy to hide behind "anonymous" I cannot take your comment seriously.

As a proud Air NZ frequent flyer, I have found them to be well deserving of this achievement. One need only travel through the USA or Europe with awful airlines such as AA, Delta or really any airline to understand the difference you get with Air NZ. I need only to recall a recent trip from LAX to JFK in a tired old 767-200 with AA which I understand was close to 20 years old to see the difference. How many airlines these days are making a profit as well?

Granted there are few airlines flying direct from US to NZ (Qantas, and Air NZ at the moment) but there are plenty of other airlines which will get you there via Australia, or one of the pacific islands. I suggest you try them and see how you fare...

Congratulations Air NZ - I'm very proud!

This is Awesome, well

By Anonymous

This is Awesome, well deserved award, and an awesome achievement for a little country at the bottom of the map, its not easy keeping up with the bigger airlines with more money, and ability to be able to provide next to nothing fares in a dwindling economy. Travelled all over the world and flown so many airlines, still rate Air Nz as number one, ground staff are Fantastic, showcasing real kiwiana attitude, trust me after being stranded in airports around the world, I can honestly say Air nz staff are the friendliest, seat layouts are much the much across the board , I have flown worse.
Again awesome news, keep it up !

By Anonymous

I think you'll find the ground staff outside of nz are often locals of that nation, or employed locally and services to air nz. I find the nz based staff fantastic, but often while travelling from Australia the qantas staff man their desks and are pretty horrible. As for the cost, well you get what you pay for, and contrary to your opinion, they are rated highly.

By Anonymous

I had numerous flights, international and domestic, by Air New Zealand since 2005, both economy and business classes, love it - best in the world (I can compare, for I travel a lot by various airlines to various places). Staff takes care of you as if you are a baby)), great food and service, planes and bookings easy. yes, they are probably more expensive than airlines in the US, but New Zealand is a small country in comparison, not much competition too. I am ready to pay for a good service though. Well deserved and congratulations to Air New Zealand. P.S. I am not a New Zealander.

Really, should an airline

By Jim Lewis

Really, should an airline which is 79.9% (data AW&ST) state-owned even be considered for this award?

State ownership of airlines should be illegal. Why award an airline who's very existence kills competition? State-owned airlines can afford much higher costs, better service, newer airplanes etc. They prevent publicly traded airlines from making a profit. A state-owned airline shouldn't even be considered for this award.

How about this? ATW could always make two separate award categories. One for state-owned carriers and a category for airlines that actually have to make a profit.

By George Okach

Amazing stuff. Well Done ANZ. You have done again, Brilliant stuff. You desrve evry bit of the award because the Management team and Staff has shown the industry that you are the masters of the game . Keep it up and ignore the isolated negative comments which may not be used for improvements as they load ill and negative energy

The award is not for the year

By Richard

The award is not for the year ahead, but for the year before, though it is announced in that year. That's common of awards anyway.

It is evident that Air New Zealand is leader in most of the markets it flies. They must be benefiting from passengers voting with their feet, and wallets / purses.

That's reason enough to award them this accolade.

10 Jan11:16

I have to say that I am

By Anonymous

I have to say that I am somewhat surprised. I certainly wouldn't have thought Air New Zealand would have been deserving of such an award. It would be interesting to learn of the criteria for selection. Most of my experiences with Air New Zealand have been ok but far from great or exceptional. I often think that you can have all the bells and whistles but unless the staff driving that product are motivated, proud or enthusiastic it doesn't really mean much. The irony of all of this is that Air New Zealand provide ground service to Qantas at Auckland and I find the serice at Qantas considerably better on the ground.

By Maria P

it is enjoyable flying with air new zealand and pleasure to be a customer of that small nations semi state owned airline. what a wonderful achievment. with such as tiny annual gdp (aprox $120B) new zealand has developed a flagship airline that punches well above its wieght. well done, really inspiring.

Flew with Air NZ to Toronto

By Anonymous

Flew with Air NZ to Toronto in December, service was excellent could not fault the flight at all...even arrived an hour ahead of schedule! Was on an older 747 but still very tidy...if you think Air NZ is bad you've probably only had one bad experience! Recently flew Lufthansa and that was the worst experience ever, even Ryanair is better....Looking forward to flying Air NZ again soon!

By Brandyn C

If your not happy with ANZ being airline of the year!! Then who do you think it should have be??

And if your gonna say AA (just because you live in the US) it just means you don't think about other countys

But from me I do think Air New Zealand has the right to have this award and good on them for doing it.

Well deserved. Last week I completed a journey to the UK from Melbourne flying Air NZ to Auckland, then LA and on to London. Returned via Hong Kong, changed in Auckland and back to Melbourne. I couldn't fault anything. Congratulations to an innovative airline punching well above it's weight.

Get over yourself and just be happy, every airline has staff that can let them down. I bet you haven't always done the best job with what ever you do. Stop being so negative and get over yourself. And don't bring down the people that have worked so hard to get this great award

By Zakaia C

NO airline is perfect ALL the time... I've flown Air NZ, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar, Etihad, Qantas, and British Airways and sometimes they're good, sometimes they're average.
An award like this isn't going to please everyone, obviously, but it was handed out by people IN the industry as opposed to those of us that just partake every now and again.

By Anonymous

Gosh, there are some sour comments about the award to Air NZ! And what a coincidence, most of them are badly ill-informed as well.

What most commentators have overlooked is that in addition to flying some of the longest of long-haul routes, Air NZ has an extensive domestic and short-haul network, where due to the open skies policies of the NZ and Australian governments, competition is exceptionally fierce. Over the last few years, Air NZ has maintained and indeed increased its significant shares of the domestic and short-haul markets, due to all of the factors cited in the award announcement.

Giovanni Bisignani for decade of excellence? Absolute and utter rubbish. This pint sized egomaniac had nothing to do with IOSA. If anything it came about despite his best efforts to kill it.

Well Deserved the work of NZ

By Aman Khan

Well Deserved the work of NZ and ANA! Congratulations to both airlines. It demonstrates that 'smaller' airlines are able to transform innovatively with speed. These guys are hearing what customers want and are able to execute!

It is interesting Etihad winning the Passenger Service Award. Apart from the fact where does the money from - there is some learning for other airlines from Etihad as well.

Jim Lewis - what you

By Rory Palmer

Jim Lewis - what you overlooked was that Air NZ began to make losses when privately owned at the same time as many airlines were going t the wall. It was rescued through gvernment injecting equity, placed in a company structure and makes a genuine unsubsidised profit. I can see why this would upset people who dogmatically believe that only private sector entities trade fairly and efficiently. Not this time Jim.
