[UPDATED FROM ORIGINAL POST] Kenya Airways Group MD and CEO Titus Naikuni said the carrier is considering canceling the nine 787s it has on order, and claimed Boeing has informed him that the Dreamliner's first delivery to ANA will be delayed another three months.
[UPDATE: Boeing issued a statement 5 hr. after this article first posted confirming that 787 first deliveries would be delayed until the 2011 first quarter (ATW Daily News, Aug. 27).]
Speaking to ATW at KQ's Nairobi headquarters, Naikuni said he is already in discussions with Airbus regarding ordering A330s as a replacement for the 787s."Yes, I would dare canceling the [787] order," he said. "If [Boeing] can't deliver, we will cancel. We will take a decision [on whether to] go with Airbus or stay with Boeing before the end of the year."
He added that he spoke to Boeing representatives "this morning and they informed me there is a further three-month delay in the first deliveries." He pointed out that a delay in first deliveries "would not [necessarily] affect our first deliveries, which are scheduled for around 2013." But he acknowledged that KQ "can only confirm" its full delivery schedule after it has received its first Dreamliner.
KQ's initial order for six 787s plus six options was placed in March 2006 with deliveries of its first two scheduled for September 2010. The airline later converted three of its six options to firm orders. The 787s are part of the carrier's fleet modernization and expansion plan, and are slated to replace its aging 767s. While KQ has some flexibility in retaining its 767s, their interiors and IFE would need to be upgraded at a major cost if they remain in the fleet for an extended period, the CEO said.
Naikuni noted Boeing has not offered compensation for the delayed 787 deliveries nor offered to participate in 767 retrofits, "which is very disappointing." KQ currently operates 29 aircraft including four 777-200ERs, six 767-300ERs, 14 737s and five E-170LRs. "We are mainly a Boeing operator, but it is doable to switch to Airbus," he said.
The carrier's expansion plans are ambitious and COO Bram Stellar said KQ will need additional aircraft even if the 787s are delivered in a reasonable timeframe.
"The plan is to launch a new destination each month for the next three years," he told ATW. "We want to fly to each capital in Africa, add more destinations in Europe [and] Asia and commence operations to Latin America." Sao Paulo is earmarked as its first Latin American destination and Kuala Lumpur is a possible addition in Asia. KQ launched several new destinations this year, including Muscat in June, Juba in July and Luanda this month, lifting its network to 50 points.
Next month it will launch services to Maputo, followed by N'Djamena in October, Jeddah and Malinde in November and Rome Fiumicino in December.
FCO will become its fourth destination in Europe. It also has secured two additional slots at London Heathrow, which will allow it to increase Nairobi-LHR frequencies to nine per week for its coming winter schedule.

By glenn e pickardIt appears that Mr.Naikuni wants Boeing to foot the bill for the B767 upgrade.
Has he asked them? Best to ask rather than wait for them to offer. And for best results, initially anyway, to do this behind the curtain not through the press.

By khawaja javaidKenya Airways can order and cancel aircrafts,it does not matter. It matters how the airline is doing in marketing, sales and customer service.Kenya Airways has no market share in North America, even Kenyans don't want to fly on Kenya Airways.Kenya Airways needs to improve its image in north ameica and europe to improve its market share.

I realy don't get it. Boeing
By Dinant van den BeltI realy don't get it. Boeing chearfully announces the 500 flight test hour for the 787 program, followed the next day by the disapointing message of another 3 month delay for the first delivery to ANA.
Reason given is the absence of a RR Trent 1000 engine, for the sixt test aircraft. One of the Trent 1000 engines failed at a test bed. This engine is already certified since 2007, what's hapening here: did RR make a mistake or did Boeing simply order too late?
I'm wondering if any further delays are foreseen as news of this three month delay was already in the news in June 2010, however officially posted on the 27th August.
Does anyone know about the Cabin Environmental systems? Sometime ago there was a lot of concern regarding this even from inside Boeing.
If Airbus manages to stay on track with their planning for the A 350, there will be only a 2 year gap between the both.

Continental already have it planned to connect Auckland with Houston next October, whilst Air India plans are still in sub-committee, but I'm sure that will change rapidly next march when there is a couple sitting on the ramp in Mumbai!

By khawaja javaidBoeing seems to be delaying the deliveries of "dreamliner"
from the pressure of "US & European Mega carriers" to hold on to their market share. All the noise is coming from Middle Eastern,Asians,African countries airlines about these extra ordinary delays. All these airlines will immediately capture the market share of these European/Us carriers.Boeing is deliberatley delaying the delivery of dreamliner from these airlines pressure.
I'm not sure where you came
By Sam WI'm not sure where you came with your unsubstantiated facts from. Kenyans and other Africans who have flown KQ always have nothing but praise for KQ's service. I have flown KQ and my experience was nothing but pleasant. Look around African and tell me which other airline other that Ethiopians Air and SAA have comparable service. You also don't make sense when you say that KQ should improve it's image in North American, yet make it known that they don't have market presence in NA which is true.
KQ has been on the rise since it was privatized and teamed up with KLM if you care to do a little research.
Boeing should be doing a better job than it's doing. They are the ones who should be doing something about their image. Holding up orders for months is not good business, especially when unemployment is high. Their should be a clause in the order contract for some type of compensation if there is a delay in delivering planes.

Sam W response to my comments
By khawaja javaidSam W response to my comments are without any knowledge about aviation business.Kenya Airways is going to Kenya for decades. It should have improved its market share by 500%,but it improve only 5%.What about BA,Qatar Airways,Emirates(10 flts per week),Virgin Atlantic,Turkish Airlines,Lufthansa(code share with ET).If Kenya Airways was so good, how come all these new airlines have taken all the market to/from Kenya, from nowhere .
For your information Kenya Airways have the presence in North America through agreements with United,Continental & American.Kenya Airways have a GSA in North America struggling.Anyone who knows aviation business can tell you ,how are SAA and ET
It is quite regrettable that
By PATRICKIt is quite regrettable that KQ has considered canceling orders for the revolutionary B787 Dreamliner. I do not think that Kenya should be denied an opportunity to enjoy the progress made in aeronautical innovations. I advise KQ to be patient because I believe safety must be guaranteed before the product is allowed in use.
Hi from the report above KQ
By WALTERHi from the report above KQ is considering to cancel order for the B787 Dreamliner (fact)...it has not done so (false). For starters KQ has had in its stable Airbus aircrafts before embarking on engagements with Boeing. The fact KQ is stating publicly that it may consider canceling the Boeing order is a wake-up call to Boeing to put its house in order, in airline business taking advantage of a business opportunity when it falls due may mark the difference between future profitability and sustainability or loss. KQ has cut itself as an airline of choice in Africa, Europe and South-east Asia a market that it intends to consolidate. Look at its dash-board performance and a consistent positive bottom line even with the spiraling fuel prices, economic downturn etc. Boeing please wake up and do business...reading today's news-feed on the manufacturers delayed ANAs delivery to Q1 in 2011 spells a lost opportunity. I hope Airbus is strategizing! Finally for KQ your are the Pride of Africa...keep it up
seems lyk u missed it! kq
By Yela Mzeiaseems lyk u missed it! kq used to operate airbus liners until an accident on the west-african coast, which pop-up a consideration to switch ta boeing. infact, they have an advantage since they already got the trained personell & facilities too... bt anyway, the decision is theirs!!!
From a technical perspective,
By KimunguyiFrom a technical perspective, it is always wiser not to be the first to operate new untested (operationally) aircraft. I would think it wiser for KQ to switch to A330 and supplement their fleet with the 787 once the aircraft is fully operational. A ride on their old 767 is quite unpleasant...especially the flight to Lagos
I would regret to seem KQ end
By AnonymousI would regret to seem KQ end up cancelling the Dreamliners orders if they do cancell I will stop using them on LHR-NRI and AMS-NRB I like the rides on the T7s and I cant bear the thought of finding myself in an a330 have had bad enough experience on those let alone one stupid brittania captain claiming they were the most fuel efficient aircraft what a dush. Naikuni should consider the cost of intergrating a new equipment as supposed to that related to the current fleet . for Boeing I think they cant do much worse than lose a customer like KQ the potential for growth is huge they should offer them brand new 767s before the delivery of the dreamliners and then convert the 767s to freighters or kc-135s. This guy talking about kenya airways k.j were do you get off comparing KQ with BA a flag carrier of a developed nation Qatar and emirates oil backed carriers you just have no prpper reosoning, yet also you claim kenyans dont want to fly KQ I have plenty of choices to choose from and I like KQ. If you are looking for someone to dump on why not try Virgin atlantic thair fleet are dirty broken they squeek and are old I would never see myself flyinf those rusty looking a340s, besides the owner is an hypocrate he used to slag BA for using 777 across the atlantic taking about how all his fleet are four engined talk about being enviromentaly concious now he has ordered 787s and is airline paticipating in bio fuels studies all he is is a treet smart felar running an airline . any way atleast KQ is not demanding astronomical amounts of money like air india are doing, if you ask me their is something wrong with Indian aviatin first air india demanding all these amounts of money and these ailines being coarsed to pay taxes mmuch quicker.

By IguanaDC3Indeed. K.J., Boeing is NOT slowing things down just to protect USA air mkt share. Take your conspiracy theory & stick it in your tailcone. And above, yes indeed; "Sir" Richard Branson is a leftist loon & a spoiled brat playboy, quite clearly, w/ an innovative penchant but a lot of ego & too much hair.

claim for compensations while maintaining orders for 3 dreamliners.
In the case of rejection of the claim, as long as the plan is not putted in jeopardy, sticking with the three and cancel the other 6 orders, preparing for a switch to the A 350
In the case of additional degrees, cancel all the orders and switch to airbus

By Florent NduwayoTo Kimunguyi: I agree with you as a passenger. I was flying on a KQ Boeing 767 from Dubai to Nairobi after a 5 hours flight from Moscow to Dubai on an Aeroflot A320. The trip Moscow Dubai was suprisingly more pleasant .
