IndiGo selected Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines to power its fleet of 150 A320neo aircraft, plus 30 options, "probably Pratt's largest order in the last 50 years," P&W President David Hess remarked to journalists at a state of the business briefing in West Palm Beach, Fla. Under terms of the agreement, Pratt will also provide maintenance for the engines.
"We are honored IndiGo chose the PurePower engine—one of the largest engine orders in recent aviation history—for their new A320neo family fleet," Hess said. IndiGo President Aditya Ghosh added, "The PurePower engine's benefits will allow us to make dramatic improvements in environmental performance with reduced emissions and significant savings in fuel consumption."
Hess said he expects P&W will engine "more than half" the 4,000 A320neo orders which Airbus expects to receive over the next 15 years (ATW Daily News, Dec. 2, 2010). With this selection, Pratt has a backlog of more than 1,200 PW1000G engines, including options. It also is the exclusive powerplant for Bombardier’s CSeries and the Mitsubishi Regional Jet.
The Indian LCC will be a launch customer for the re-engined narrowbody under an MOU signed with Airbus at the end of December (ATW Daily News, Jan. 19). Virgin America was the first carrier to place a firm order for the aircraft.
