Emirates' ambitions to build Dubai into "a central gateway to worldwide air travel" took another major step forward yesterday as it ordered 32 additional A380svalued at $11.5 billion at list prices, the single biggest order for the aircraft to date and bringing EK's total orders for the type to 90.
The order agreement was signed in a ceremony yesterday at the Berlin Air Show witnessed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel, EK Chairman and CEO Ahmed bin SaeedAl-Maktoum and Airbus President and CEO Tom Enders.
Al-Maktoum told media that "the A380 is a great aircraft and our passengers worldwide are enthusiastic about this new dimension of air travel. This latest order, adding to 58 A380s previously ordered, affirms Emirates' strategy to become a world leading carrier and to further establish Dubaias a central gateway to worldwide air travel."
Enders said, "Emirates has supported the development of the A380 from the earliest days, and today's order...is the best endorsement I can imagine."
EK took delivery of its 10th A380 this week and currently serves London Heathrow, Toronto, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Jeddah, Bangkok, Seoul Incheon, Sydney and Auckland with the aircraft. It plans to start A380 service from Dubai to Beijing on Aug. 1 and to Manchester on Sept. 1 and will restore A380 service on its Dubai-New York JFK route in October.
The carrier plans to have an enormous amount of widebody capacity in the future: In addition to the 80 A380s it still has on order for delivery, it has commitments for 70 A350s and 18 777-300s.

Wow!!! I can't imagine
By AnonymousWow!!! I can't imagine having so many of that behemoth of an aircraft. With full loads, these could take about 40 minutes to board and deplane. I sure an international arrivals building will be swaring in lines of arriving flights!
Hat's off to Emirates! They ARE OUTSTANDING in the sky.

By AnonymousReally surprised by Emmirates large order. I wonder how they expect to fill these aircraft in Dubai specially when nobody wants to fly there. I'll take the 777 any day over the A380. Thw A380 will be a thorn in Airbus pocket book.

By IguanaMikeKudos to Emirates, but an order as large as this one for this overhyped fat beastie is going to backfire on the big E '. I've a bad gut feeling, alas....

He is already gone apoplectic over there and his appearance here is all that is missing from a great day for Airbus!

By Joe in PAHTo add to the boarding and deplaning of this aircraft. After 25 years in airline customer service I would NOT ever want to be an agent working on a 380 that goes into a delay or forbid a cancellation, all I can say is the boarding area/gate would not be a pretty site to see. Best of luck to EK employees...I prey for you.

By philGood customer service? My friend, how can you compare Dubai to the United States airlines? It's city-state, just like Singapore, we're comparing apples and oranges. At least we know the Arabs haven't changed their habits since the 1970s, always buy bigger not sensibly.

By KevinHmm, do ya think there just might be a bubble in the Middle East? Okay, Dubai the city is bankrupt. Had to be bailed-out by Abu Dhabi. The UAE gov't writes the checks for Emirates Airlines. This is a spending orgy bearing no relation to market conditions or the the grim fiscal reality of the UAE and especially Dubai at present. Very bad idea.
Well, at least they won't
By AnonymousWell, at least they won't have to move them far to park in the desert. The phrase "all hat and no cattle" comes to mind, as well.
Right, they can park them in
By AnonymousRight, they can park them in the desert! I suspect they got these for A SONG because Airbus hasn't signed up a big order for a while. It would not be surprising if this is a way of striking fear into the 'hearts' of the competition. Even Singapore Airlines has not bought any A380s for years, nor will it have a similar size fleet.
Perhaps they are buying these for an airline they will take over soon?

Thanks Phil for the reality check.
Maybe Obahma can buy the US airlines a stack of Boeings since he wants us to be like the Middle East so much. Emirates does it like the US airlines did before deregulation & the low cost cattle car invasion. Emirates doesn't have to deal with profits or peanut throwing SWA.
Hey Obahma! Even though you
By AnonymousHey Obahma! Even though you genuflect to them and their OIL money they still bought more of the French product over US. Or is that what you were wanting??
Those who long for Emirates quality in the USA yet talk praise and fly SWA need to open your ECON 101 textbooks.
The American owned
By Herb K.The American owned international carriers can merge all the way down to one airline but eventualy they will have to compete with the state run airlines. It can't be done. United, Delta & American have to deal with something called a "bottom line," oh, and low cost carriers, like stated above.

By Anonymousam astonished what happens to the airline industry will they change the field to be a leasing company if not then what is the source of traffic in the middle east which needs all those aircrafts, may be they will buy the 24 arab carriers and work on behalf of them. hope this never happen
I must be missing something.
By krzyhrsI must be missing something. How in the world is Emirates going to fill around 75 or so A380's that are line ready everyday flying mostly to or from Dubai, What do they think is there that millions of people a year will go there? Very few A380's have been sold outside of Asia and the Arab world.

And: Dubai can be bypassed, just used as a hub, as it has done for thousands of years (from camel to A380?).

By Anonymous SnoopyThe momen most of their 90 A380 of Emirates are operating they are flying from all Europe hubs and non hubs 5x daily to DUB to connect with the rest of the world . Euorpe will have no choice but to fly them because their airlines are only Germanwings Easyjet and Ryanair for local flights
The moment most of the 90
By Anonymous SnoopyThe moment most of the 90 A380 are in operation the European can forget their airlines. Enmirates will operate 5 x daily all hub and non hub cities to connect in DUB to feed 'em. Only Germanwings Easyjet and Ryanair do connect from Hahn or other way off airports within Europe. Will switch zu Zeppelins !!
It is for a time laughable,
By JonIt is for a time laughable, but eventually tiresome to read anti-Airbus fans continually saying things like "nobody wants to fly to Dubai".
Why don't they understand that Emirates at Dubai is positioned as a hub between Europe and Asia, and it is about flying people from Mumbai or Tokyo to places like Dusseldorf and Rome? And more economically than non-stop to boot?
Dream on, people wanting the A380 and Emirates to fail. Economic reality still exists.
This is nothing more than a
By AnonymousThis is nothing more than a poke in the eye to LH and the German gov't for not letting EK walk all over LH by allowing EK to fly anywhere they want in Germany. Since EK's fuel costs are lower, the competition isn't even. By offering to buy this many 380s, EK is asking Germany if they want it both ways- we'll buy your products if you let us fly wherever. If Germany's smart, they'll say no thanks, and see whether EK's check to EADS clears. But it ccomes down to service jobs at LH vs. manufacturing jobs at EADS--tough choice for Germany. Others in EU-land are gonna have the question come up as well, and soon. See WSJ Wednesday for another article with political details.
1 jet fuel is more expensive
By one that knows1 jet fuel is more expensive in the Gulf they have to import it
2look at a globe the gulf is the best point to tranfers for the most of the world.
3 they serve destinations that 1st world airlines ignored, but are now relatively well off India has greater number of middleclass people than the usa and they are increasing exponentially.look at how few us citizens have passports!
4do people use SIN as end destination?
I think the same too.
By AzriI think the same too. Emirates will end like JAL.
comment for other A380 buyer
By Azricomment for other A380 buyer which is to Malaysia Airlines. Malaysia Airlines only bought 6 A380s which is not enough to replace its all aging 747-400 and under purchased . Malaysia Airlines should bought another 4 or 6 more A380s. People will fly on that particular airline because of the service offering and type of fleet. Buying A380 is a good investment but not over purchased like Emirates that will end up with bankruptcy.
it is not anti-airbus
By Anonymousit is not anti-airbus comments it is because of the unreasonable numbers of A380 bought by one customer ,feal it is very risky ,if any inconvenience occured to one aircraft the remaining will not find the passengers ,it is too big and like a big mall crowdy and loud.

By Paul O.As a fan of aviation, I have been following the A380 since ... commenced after its unveiling in France in 2005.
I do think the order by the Emirates was quite ambitious. However, looking at the transformation of Dubai over the past quarter century, this sort of "reach" should not come as a surprise. Moreover, as people have pointed out with the market pushing toward Asia, there won't be a shortage of people traveling between Europe and Asia. Dubai is in an advantageous spot for travel to Asia and Europe. Yesterday provided an example of this as an A380 from Dubai touched down in Shanghai for the first time.
